Aluminum shingles in BC

Aluminum shingles are stamped aluminum roofing panels that don't rust, because there is no steel inside them. Interlock® aluminum shingles interlock on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, are made in Canada in Delta, BC, and are installed across British Columbia by our own company.

What makes an aluminum shingle different

An aluminum shingle is a stamped aluminum panel with a baked finish. Unlike a steel shingle, there is no steel core under the finish, so there is nothing to rust if the finish is scratched or cut. The exposed aluminum forms an oxide film that blocks further oxidation (ASM International).

Interlock® aluminum shingles lock to each other on all four sides. The fasteners sit under the course above, out of the weather, so the roof has no exposed screw heads and no rubber washers to age.

Aluminum shingles in BC

Wet coastal winters

From Metro Vancouver to the Island and the Sunshine Coast, a roof spends most of the winter wet. Cedar holds that water and softens; asphalt granules trap the debris moss grows in. Aluminum absorbs nothing and cannot rot. Valleys and gutters still collect needles and leaves, so we'll tell you what to clear and how often.

Salt air on the coast and islands

Waterfront homes on the coast, the Island and the Gulf Islands take salt spray all year. Aluminum does not rust, so salt air doesn't do to it what it does to steel.

Okanagan and Thompson summers

The Interior's summers are hot and dry, with long fire seasons. Class A is available on our roofs as a complete assembly (two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, per ASTM E108), and aluminum does not ignite. FireSmart BC calls the house and the first 1.5 m around it the most critical zone, because that is where embers reach the roof, gutters and vents.

Interior and mountain snow

Sea-to-Sky, the Interior and the upland slopes get real snow. A metal roof sheds it, so snow guards over entries, decks and driveways go in at the estimate, and the light panels leave the framing's capacity for the snow load the BC Building Code sets for the location.

Questions, answered

What are aluminum shingles?

Aluminum shingles are roofing panels stamped from aluminum sheet and finished with a baked coating, made to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile. Interlock® aluminum shingles interlock on all four sides with concealed fasteners.

Do aluminum shingles rust?

No. Aluminum forms a thin oxide film that blocks further oxidation, and there is no steel inside an aluminum shingle to rust, which is why they suit homes near salt water.

Are aluminum shingles better than steel shingles?

Aluminum doesn't rust and is about one-third the density of steel. Steel shingles usually cost less up front and depend on their zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting. Aluminum can dent under large hail.

How thick are Interlock aluminum shingles?

0.019 in (0.483 mm) nominal base thickness, aluminum alloy per ASTM B209, according to the manufacturer's specification.

Where can I get aluminum shingles installed in BC?

Interlock Metal Roofing (BC) Ltd. installs Interlock® aluminum shingles across British Columbia, with 2,244 roofs completed. The panels are made in Delta, BC. Call (604) 210-3850 or book a consultation on Zoom.

Can aluminum shingles be installed over asphalt?

A single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if our inspection finds it suitable. Cedar shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first.

Do aluminum shingles help with moss?

Aluminum absorbs no water and cannot rot, so moss has nothing to root into the way it does in cedar or between asphalt granules. Needles and leaves still collect in valleys and gutters on a shaded roof, so keep those clear.
